Vrijthof
Vrijthof is the old city
center of Maastricht where you can visit other
nearby attractions such as Sint Servaas Basiliek or
the Selexyz Dominicanen bookshop.
Saint Servatius Bridge
The famous medieval bridge is the oldest bridge in
The Netherlands built between 1280 and 1295. Originally
made of wood by the Romans, It has been since restored
and rebuilt numerous times. It was a focal point for
defending the city in the past. The original foundations
remains and is still a vital part of the city as it
connects the old city to the newer part of the city
where the train station is.
Bonnefanten Musuem
A prominent landmark next to River Maas, it contains
contemporary art as well as old masters art pieces
from famous artists. The musuem is opened daily from
tuesdays to sundays from 11 p.m. to 5 p.m. Last entrance
is at 4.30 p.m.
Sint Pietersberg
A hill in which Fort Sint Pieter, an 18th century
Roman fort is situated. A large network of tunnels
dug by the Romans remain at the hill. Some of the
tunnels are enlarged and converted to "caves"
where people hid in during the Second World War. Please
contact the VVV tourist office located on the corner
of the Grote Staat and Kleine Staat for tour guides
to guide you through the tunnels.
Derlon Hotel Museum and Old
Roman City Walls
Located at the basement of Derlon Hotel, it contains
remains of a Roman temple. The hotel was completely
rebuilt in 1983 to preserve the remains of the Roman
Temple. The old city walls are found around Maastricht
city. There are originally built by the Romans to
defend the city and parts of it still remain around
the city most notably the Helpoort, a huge town gate
built in the 13th century and the oldest remaining
city gate in The Netherlands. There is a small musuem
on the history of Maastricht in it now and it opens
daily from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
