Park Guell
Park Guell (Parc Guell in Catalan) lies in the Gracia
district on a hill and was orginally designed by Gaudi
to be a self sufficient garden village. However, the
project failed as there were no buyers for the properties
built and the place was acquired by the city and opened
up as a park. Gaudi himself bought one of the houses
and moved in to stay in 1906. The house that Gaudi
lived in is now a museum displaying Gaudi designed
furnitures and drawings of his designs.
Well known features of the park comprises of the
dragon and mosiac decorated staircase at the entrance
and the ceramic serpent mosiac bench which surrounds
a plaza. The bench is now recognised as what is the
world's longest bench and the plaza offers paranomic
views of the entire Barcelona city.
To reach Park Guell, drop off at the nearest metro
station at Lesseps and get ready for a steep walk
up the hill. Alternatively, take bus 24 which is usually
very crowded with tourists and pickpockets alike (watch
your wallets and purses). Entrance is free and the
park opens from 10 a.m. to dusk.
