Placa d'Espanya
Placa d'Espanya was built for the 1929 International
Exhibition and is a large sqaure located at the foot
of Montjuic
hill.
There are many attractions near Placa d'Espanya and
most of them are also part of the project for the
1929 International Exhibition. They include the Font
Magica, Palau Nacional which currently houses
the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC),
the Venetian Towers, Parc de Joan Miro, Fundacio
Joan Miro, Arenas de Barcelona, Pueblo
Español de Montjuic, CaixaForum,
Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya (Catalan Archaeological
Museum), Museu Etnologic (Catalan Ethnographical Museum)
and the Barcelona
Pavilion.
The Venetian Towers are found along the sides of
Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, an avenue leading
from Placa d'Espanya to the foot of Palau Nacional.
The towers are modeled after the bell towers of Venetian
Cathedral at San Marco Square in Venice and was used
as the entrance gate for the 1929 Intenational Exhibition.
Parc de Joan Miro contains one of Joan Miro last
works, the Woman and Bird - a 22 meter statue in the
middle of the park. The park is a few blocks off Placa
d'Espanya near the musical fountains.
Arenas de Barcelona was a bullring found in a corner
of Placa d'Espanya. It saw its last bullfight in 1977
and has since been unused. It was built in traditional
Moorish style in 1900 and plans are afloated to convert
the place to a shopping leisure park with the exterior
of the building kept intact.
Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya is housed in the
former Palace of Graphic Arts and features artifacts
found in the Catalunya area from the Greek, Roman,
and Carthaginian periods. The museum is located near
the foot of Palau Nacional.
Museu Etnologic features temporary collections from
different indigenous cultures from Africa, Asia, America
and Oceania. The museum is located a short walk from
Palau Nacional.
To reach Placa d'Espanya, drop off at Espanya metro
station. From Placa d'Espanya, it is a good idea to
catch the Bus Montjuic Turistic from Placa d'Espanya
to explore the whole of Montjuic fully as the bus
reaches all the major attractions on the hill.
