Placa d'Espanya

Placa d'Espanya was built for the 1929 International Exhibition and is a large sqaure located at the foot of Montjuic hill.

There are many attractions near Placa d'Espanya and most of them are also part of the project for the 1929 International Exhibition. They include the Font Magica, Palau Nacional which currently houses the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Venetian Towers, Parc de Joan Miro, Fundacio Joan Miro, Arenas de Barcelona, Pueblo Español de Montjuic, CaixaForum, Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya (Catalan Archaeological Museum), Museu Etnologic (Catalan Ethnographical Museum) and the Barcelona Pavilion.

The Venetian Towers are found along the sides of Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, an avenue leading from Placa d'Espanya to the foot of Palau Nacional. The towers are modeled after the bell towers of Venetian Cathedral at San Marco Square in Venice and was used as the entrance gate for the 1929 Intenational Exhibition.

Parc de Joan Miro contains one of Joan Miro last works, the Woman and Bird - a 22 meter statue in the middle of the park. The park is a few blocks off Placa d'Espanya near the musical fountains.

Arenas de Barcelona was a bullring found in a corner of Placa d'Espanya. It saw its last bullfight in 1977 and has since been unused. It was built in traditional Moorish style in 1900 and plans are afloated to convert the place to a shopping leisure park with the exterior of the building kept intact.

Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya is housed in the former Palace of Graphic Arts and features artifacts found in the Catalunya area from the Greek, Roman, and Carthaginian periods. The museum is located near the foot of Palau Nacional.

Museu Etnologic features temporary collections from different indigenous cultures from Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. The museum is located a short walk from Palau Nacional.

To reach Placa d'Espanya, drop off at Espanya metro station. From Placa d'Espanya, it is a good idea to catch the Bus Montjuic Turistic from Placa d'Espanya to explore the whole of Montjuic fully as the bus reaches all the major attractions on the hill.
