Temple Expiatori de
la Sagrada Família
Designed by Antonio
Gaudi, Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia
(Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family) has evolved
into the most iconic structure of Barcelona and Spain.
The huge irony is that the construction of the Sagrada
Familia is not yet completed even though construction
started in 1882. Part of the reason is due to the
fact that Antonio Gaudi passed away abruptly in 1926
without a proper successor to oversee the designs
and construction. Further disruptions happen in the
form of the Spanish civil war and a fire that burned
some of Gaudi's designs and Sagrada Familia models.
The designs and structures built after Gaudi's death
were adaptations of Gaudi's former designs recovered
from the fire as well as by other architects who took
over the project.
Scheduled to be completed in 2026, Gaudi's 100th
year death anniversary, the completed Sagrada Familia
will have 18 towers with the towers representing the
12 Apostles, the 4 Evangelists, Virgin Mary and Jesus
Christ. The tower representing Jesus Christ will be
constructed in the center and surmounted with a huge
cross making it the tallest point of the structure.
There will be 4 facades namely the Nativity facade,
the Glory facade, the Apse facade and the Passion
facade with the Navity facade built before the Spanish
civil war and hence possessing most of Gaudi's style
and design.
For the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi used tree structures
for pillars to distribute the load effectively and
to associate the temple with nature. He used a total
of 22 different kind of stones for the construction
of the temple for their different properties.
