Universiteit Maastricht
Universiteit Maastricht was founded in 1975 and is
one of the best universities in The Netherlands and
Europe. Teaching is done mostly in english. It is
famed for its problem based learning structure which
encourages students to do self directed learning and
promotes creative thinking.
The school itself is not very impressive as compared
to many other universities. Its school componds are
scattered around the city although not directly located
in the city center. Tutorial classrooms take up most
of the space while there are only a few lecture halls.
The canteens provide a standard food menu according
to the day of the week and is usually quite packed
during lunch hours. While not exactly state of the
art, there are adequate facilities to go around although
one might expect more from a school that provides
some of the best business students in Europe.
The school population consists of mostly of Germans
and Dutch with some Belgians forming the minority.
This is due to Maastricht close proximity to the Dutch
and Belgian borders. Foreign exchange students also
take up a huge majority of the student population.
They generally reside in the Maastricht
Guesthouse. This gives the school a multi-national
population making it an excellent place for foreign
students to study in. Join the regular weekly or even
daily pub crawl with students of various nationalities
at the local pubs in Maastricht.
The problem based learning system creates a huge
problem for students who are used to a lecture tutorial
teaching style. Lectures are few and in between while
students HAVE TO speak up and discuss about what they
prepared for the class in tutorials or face having
low participation marks. A student is required to
pass both his or her participation and exam in order
to pass that particular course. Failure to do so might
result in additional assignments or retests which
they must pass in order not to get kick out of the
school. The fact that the tutors are actually students
who are either still studying for a higher degree
or have just graduated for some time does not make
the job easier as they do not teach but simply discuss
about the lesson on hand. However, this system ensures
that students must prepare for classes and is an effective
way of producing good students.
All in all, do pay Universiteit Maastricht a visit
if you are interested in studying there all simply
want to absorb the youthful vibe there. Interact with
the many students there who make up a large number
of the population in Maastrich today.
