Vrijthof Maastricht
Center
Vrijthof is the old city center of Maastricht. While
similar to many other old city centers all over Europe,
it is still worth visiting it as it the the epicenter
of happenings in Maastricht. Festivals, concerts and
events such as Winterland are held annually there.
Vrijthof is bordered by Theatre Aan Het Vrijthof
Maastricht, the city's theatre on one side and Sint
Servaas Basiliek on another side. There are rows of
cool pubs and cafes across the narrow road.
Sint Servaas Basiliek was named after SInt Servaas
who helped spread christianity to the low countries
(Present day Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg).
The present day church was rebuilt in 1039 and clearly
retains the Romanesque heritage. The remains of Sint
Servaas is also brought to the Basiliek and can be
visited.
In a corner of the Vrijthof near the Mac Donalds,
lies a new shopping center Entre Deux. Connected to
the shopping center is a Selexyz Dominicanen bookshop
which was set up in a 800 year old Dominican church.
It was voted as the most beautiful bookshop by The
Guardian, a Britiish newspaper. Do visit it to experience
the charm and beauty of its design.
